Introducing Certified Adult ADHD+ Practitioner Status

We’re launching a new Certified Specialism at The Grove: Certified Adult ADHD+ Practitioner status. Endorsed by Dr James Kustow, the status recognises qualified, established therapists who have completed a defined training pathway and have demonstrated how they apply this comprehensive training in real clinical work. The status support therapists in identifying how they will integrate their learning into their practice and support this client group with an effective toolkit.

A new professional recognition for therapists working with adult ADHD

Adult ADHD support now comes from a wide range of professionals, therapists, coaches, mentors, and educators, with very different levels of training behind them. ADHD clients aren’t always well placed to judge the difference.

While enthusiasm, lived experience and practical strategies all have great value, they are not substitutes for rigorous training, ethical accountability, supervision and reflective clinical practice. Adult ADHD rarely exists in isolation. It often intersects with trauma, attachment difficulties, relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, burnout and nervous system dysregulation. Supporting this complexity requires more than techniques; it requires professional competence.

We wanted a way for therapists to demonstrate this higher level of competence, and clients to recognise a genuine depth of training.

Why full-body, applied training matters

Much of the public conversation about ADHD still centres on the brain; attention span, dopamine, executive function. But a therapist who only understands the cognitive piece is missing a large part of the story.

Our approach treats ADHD as a whole-person, whole-body experience. Training on the pathway includes body-informed approaches, including Solo-Soma, a body-focused practice developed by Dr James Kustow specifically to support emotional regulation in ADHD, alongside Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and our flagship three-day ADHD+ practitioner training.

What is Certified Adult ADHD+ Practitioner status

The Certified Adult ADHD+ Practitioner status is a professional recognition for qualified, established therapists who have gone beyond a single training course to demonstrate real, applied expertise in adult ADHD+ practice. It’s awarded to therapists who complete three specialist training courses and submit assessed written work demonstrating how they apply The Grove’s integrative, body-informed model in clinical practice.

Endorsed by Dr James Kustow

The status is personally endorsed by Dr James Kustow, Consultant Psychiatrist, our Medical Director, and one of the most respected voices in adult ADHD in the UK and around the world today.

Dr Kustow works within one of the very few NHS Adult ADHD services in London, and is the author of the bestselling book How to Thrive with Adult ADHD. He’s also the creator of the 10 Domains of Dysregulation – a framework that has reshaped how many clinicians think about ADHD altogether.

Rather than viewing ADHD through the narrow lens of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, Dr Kustow’s model maps ten interconnected domains: attention, activity, impulse, emotion, reward, sensory processing, time appraisal, sleep-wake rhythm, immune function and energy regulation

His integrative approach, treating ADHD as a lived experience affecting mind and body, not just a checklist of behaviours, underpins the entire training pathway.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Certified Adult ADHD+ Practitioner status?

It’s a professional recognition awarded by The Grove to qualified therapists who complete a structured training pathway and demonstrate applied clinical use of The Grove’s adult ADHD+ model, endorsed by Dr James Kustow.

Who is eligible to apply?

Qualified, established practitioners, such as counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, or psychiatrists, who meet The Grove’s minimum entry requirements before undertaking any Grove training.

What training do I need to complete first?

All three core courses: the ADHD+ 3-Day Practitioner Training, EFT to Level 2, and the Solo-Soma Retreat (or equivalent, with evidence).

How much does certification cost?

£250 + VAT, which includes 2 years of certification and your digital credential. Renewal is £50 + VAT every 2 years. An instalment plan is available.

Is this the same as becoming an ADHD coach?

No. This is a clinical specialism for qualified, accredited therapists. Certified practitioners must not represent it as an ADHD coaching qualification.

How long does the certification last?

Two years from the date of award. Renewal requires confirmation of continued practice, supervision, insurance, and CPD relevant to ADHD and neurodiversity.

What happens if my written work doesn’t pass?

Assessment is pass / not yet met. If criteria aren’t fully met, you may resubmit once following further professional development.

Can I use equivalent EFT training instead of The Grove’s programme?

Yes, provided it was delivered by a recognised EFT Trainer and you can evidence satisfactory completion. You’ll need to self-determine equivalence in advance.
