This is the home of Dr Kustow’s ADHD work at The Grove Practice

Are you living with Adult ADHD, or supporting someone who is, and feeling like the standard explanations don’t quite cover your full experience? Persistent fatigue, chronic pain, hypermobility, gut problems, brain fog, or immune sensitivities alongside the classic ADHD picture?

Dr James Kustow, Consultant Psychiatrist, leading Adult ADHD specialist, and author of How to Thrive with Adult ADHD (Penguin, 2024), has spent two decades working at the intersection of neurodevelopment, physical health, and integrative psychiatry.

His work offers something rare: a framework that finally joins the dots.

The Somatic Super Syndrome – Dr Kustow’s Groundbreaking Framework

If you’ve been referred to five different specialists for five different symptoms, but none of them are talking to each other, that’s the system failing you, not your body.

The 3S model offers:

  • A more complete explanation of your lived experience
  • A framework for more integrative, compassionate assessment and treatment
  • Practical pathways to regulate your nervous system, not just manage your attention
  • Hope – because understanding the whole picture is the first step to addressing it

The Somatic Super Syndrome (3S) is a model developed by Dr James Kustow to describe a striking pattern he observed repeatedly in his clinical practice: that many adults with ADHD also experience a cluster of physical health conditions that conventional medicine often treats in isolation, if it notices them at all.

At the core of the 3S model are three interconnected systems:

  • Connective tissue dysregulation: including hypermobility syndromes such as Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD). Research suggests approximately half of individuals with ADHD are hypermobile.

  • Dysautonomia: particularly Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), affecting the autonomic nervous system and contributing to fatigue, dizziness, brain fog, mood instability and disrupted sleep.

  • Immune hypersensitivity: including Mast Cell Activation Disease (MCAD), autoimmune tendencies, allergies, and chronic inflammatory conditions.

Together, these systems interact in ways that amplify ADHD symptoms, create additional layers of disability, and, crucially, often go entirely unrecognised. Dr Kustow’s work, presented at the European Congress of Psychiatry and featured in ADDitude Magazine, is helping change that.

In this powerful one-hour session, Dr Kustow and psychotherapist Robert Rees introduce the Somatic Super Syndrome model, exploring the overlooked connection between ADHD, the body’s stress system, connective tissue, and immune hypersensitivity.

Ideal for both individuals with ADHD and the clinicians and coaches who support them.
