Sarah Briggs

Sarah Briggs

Director and core tutor

Sarah Briggs brings forward her decades of experience of working therapeutically with couples and relationships.

Sarah is accredited by COSRT (College of Sexual and Relationship Therapy) in the UK as a psychosexual / relationship therapist and supervisor. In recent years Sarah gained the status of Certified Imago Therapist after completing a training run in the USA, as well as studying the Gottman method of relationship therapy to Level 1.

Working in a trauma-wise way, she brings an engaging and relational approach to her client work. Trauma is a significant area of her practice which can often be figural in psychosexual and relationship difficulties. Sarah has worked with many survivors of childhood sexual abuse and rape, supporting them in making sense of what has happened and encouraging them to process what has happened so that they can reconstruct more fulfilling intimate partner relationships in adulthood.

Her understanding of the couple contract (conscious and unconscious) is built on the foundations of attachment theory, developmental psychology, intentional communication with the language of emotional responsibility, clean language with metaphor and creativity. Other influences on Sarah’s couple/relationship frameworks encompass Esther Perel, Dr Harville Hendrix and Dr Helen La Kelly Hunt, Dr John Gottman and Dr Julie Schwartz Gottman, Dominic Davies, Silva Neves.

Sarah’s professional credentials include:

  • Certified Imago Therapist
  • Completion of Level 1 training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, using Gottman Method Couples Therapy in clinical work
  • EMDR to Level 4 (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)
  • EFT Level 1 & 2 (Emotional Freedom Technique or “tapping”)
  • Matrix Reimprinting practitioner
  • Certified Clinical Trauma Professional awarded by the International Association of Trauma Professionals.
  • Member of the UK Psychological Trauma Society (UKPTS)
  • Equine-facilitated therapist doubly-certified: by IFEEL and by LEAP.

Sarah also teaches on The Grove’s supervision course and trauma course and creativity programmes, drawing on her experience in supervising therapists through each stage of their professional development: as trainees, then qualified therapists, toward gaining accreditation or UKCP registrant status.
